
A line of intense, fast-moving storms known as a derecho moved through a portion of the Midwest on Monday, resulting in downed trees, widespread utility outages and structural damage across several states.
In addition to producing wind gusts in excess of 100 mph, the system also spawned multiple tornadoes, with eight reportedly touching down across the greater Chicago area.
According to officials, power was knocked out to more than one million homes and businesses, with at least 475,000 located in Illinois and 400,000 in Iowa alone.
