A low-end derecho hammered portions of the South with heavy rain and tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorms beginning late last week culminated in a low-end derecho event (fast-moving, destructive storms) that generated flooding rain, grapefruit-size hail and several tornadoes across the South and Midwest through Sunday.

Media outlets continue to report on locations sustaining structural damage associated with the activity, including hardest-hit areas such as Palmetto, La., that experienced major home damage and destruction.
