Hurricane Zeta made landfall as a Category 2 storm Wednesday evening near Cocodrie, La. (Terrebonne Parish, 70344).
From there, the system briskly moved over New Orleans and then into Mississippi, Georgia and the Carolinas, lashing impacted areas with heavy rain and damaging winds exceeding 135 mph. As a result, there have been widespread reports of roof damage (stripped shingles), downed trees/utility lines and major power outages (more than 2.6 million residents affected across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Virginia and Georgia).
It should be noted that while flooding rain and dangerous surge has been experienced, it appears that high winds have been the primary source of damage from the storm.
As the 27th storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, Zeta was the fifth named storm to make landfall in Louisiana as well as the sixth hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. this year.
