As the first named weather system to make landfall in Florida during the 2020 hurricane season, Tropical Storm Eta did so twice within a single week.
During contact with the southern portion of the state on Sunday, the storm caused widespread flooding across Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.
After moving back into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, it then proceeded to reverse its course and track toward the state’s Big Bend region, where it made a second landfall early Thursday morning, near Cedar Key. The storm flooded homes and downed trees across areas previously spared from its initial encounter.
Finally, on its way to the Atlantic Ocean later that day, it temporarily merged with a separate system that was producing heavy rain across the East and Southeast U.S. As a result, portions of North and South Carolina have reportedly experienced major flooding that has overflowed rivers and found its way into homes and businesses.
